to minivan or not to minvan…should there be a question?!

to minivan or not to minvan…should there be a question?! not for the modern mama! i know the sales pitch - minivans are the quentissential vehicle of convenience and comfort for today’s family. and this may be true…however, for the modern mama, it isn’t about convenience, or comfort and usually boils down to form over function! (just picture me chasing down my 3 year old on the playground in manolo blahniks while carrying my 10 month old!) why am i so steadfast against the minivan?! i am not sure, but in my mind i truly equate owning a minvan with losing all things hip and cool about myself. i mean first the minivan, then what?! the ‘mom’ haircut, sensible shoes, and elastic waist pants - oh my! will the radio station suddenly play only ‘lite rock’ or worse - nursery rhymes?! do you wonder why they don’t offer minivans in the same color as sports cars or with racing stripes? for the record, my SUV has plenty of room for my kids, my shopping, and my identity! …not to mention, my kids like to rock out to fall out boy just like their mama! ;)

the 2 april 2007 edition of businessweek had a article titled, ‘What Do 35-Year-Old Women Want?’ which is about Bloomingdale’s new business venture pursuing “yummy mommies” - what the chain has dubbed as the stylish 35-45 year olds that may have gone up a size post-baby, but are adamant that motherhood is not synonymous with looking matronly — a true modern mama mantra! i am interested to see how this in-store boutique does, especially since other retail giants have failed at capturing this elusive demographic in the past. if any chain can pull it off, bloomies can. i mean, let’s face it, the past attempts at seizing the attention of the ‘hip-mama’ crowd were by The Gap and Gymboree - two names definitely NOT synonymous with fashion or hip. Gymboree is for kids, and I can’t even recall the last time I ‘fell in to the GAP’ unless it was babyGAP… now, will Bloomies also be offering in-store bugaboo strollers for stylish mama’s to use while perusing the couture racks for an outfit to wear to their kids’ soccer practice? only time will tell, but the main concept behind this venture is ‘one-stop shopping’ where one can get an outfit for soccer practice, a PTA meeting, and a cocktail party all in one place… i know my kids are still young, but thus far, the definition of this modern mama’s one-stop shopping is Super Target - a drugstore, grocery store, home decor store, and clothing store, all under one roof! now, i have yet to purchase clothes from target (besides their fabulous selection of kids/infant clothes), but i keep telling a girlfriend of mine that i am about 6 months away from doing so (although i have been saying this for the last two years and it has yet to happen!) since it seems like Super Target is the only store that has shopping carts that both boys can ride in AND toys that can occupy them while sitting in the shopping cart while i shop for everything on my list! no more driving from store to store with kids in tow, just park - get in and get out. …now if only bloomingdales would start selling groceries - a girl can dream, right?!

got any fav shopping places that you think modern mamas would want to shop at and have her kids in tow?! this modern mama wants to know! besides my weekly jaunt to SuperTarget, i also like to hit off-price retail shops like nordstom rack, homegoods, and marshalls. all three stores offer high-end designer labels without the sticker shock. they are fun places to hit when boredom sits in since you won’t break the bank (although i have come close at homegoods several times according to my husband!) and you will have a lot of fun checking out all the cool stuff.

for ‘cheap n chic’ kids clothes you can buy in your pj’s - and i don’t mean moschino (only true fashionista modern mamas will get that one!), you can’t go wrong with oldnavy.com and childrensplace.com - both with $5.00 flat rate shipping. did you know that both stores are owned by the same parent company as The Gap and Banana Republic?

of course, a modern mama also has to indulge herself in rule #5 with plenty of retail therapy, so be sure to get your fill of your fav big box retailers like bloomingdales, saks, nordstroms, and macys - as well as your local hip boutiques where ‘everybody knows your name… and, not to mention - your dress size!’

disney is a destination - not a designer. (part II)

now i know i may have offended some mama’s with definition #3 of a modern mama so let me try and shed some modern mama light on the subject. i have NO PROBLEM with other kids who wear licensed characters, nor with other mamas who buy them for their kids, I just don’t like them for MY KIDS! when dressing my kids, my rule of thumb is - if the article of clothing were ‘adult sized’, would an adult look ridiculous wearing it (see part I)? Infants are another story…winnie the pooh is cute and cuddly for an infant, but the winnie the pooh clothing line should stop at size 9-12 months. why should i pay $18.00 for a bob the builder t-shirt when i can pay the same amount for quiksilver, hurley, nike, or puma? bob the builder is a wonderful toy and tv show - and even as a pajama that can be worn behind closed doors at home, but not so cute as a warm-up suit for public consumption!

now, don’t get me wrong - I love disney and its characters as much as the next person, and my kids are big fans of toy story, cars, etc. so, let me share with you some wasy to bring the magic of disney ‘home’ (but not in your kids’ dresser drawers)!

disney characters or a disney-themed room would be a big hit for any young child. not only are there countless products available ranging from bedsheets, to wall decor, to room accessories, but it also an easy theme to DIY it. the best thing about most children’s characters is the fact that they originated as cartoon characters so are simple ‘line-art’ subject to create as murals in your room of choice. with only a few dollars spent at your local craft store on some acryllic paint tubes (craftart, apple barrel, etc), you can add disney characters to your walls or any paintable surface in your kids’ rooms. any of you mama’s out there - have you done any ‘custom designs’ in your kids’ rooms? if so, please POST them on this site and share your creativity with all the other fab mamas out there!

…and if you just GOTTA do the license character thing for your kid’s wardrobe - go with something timeless like curious george, hello kitty, or paul frank!

disney is a destination - not a designer. (part I)

i often wonder why disneyland and disney stores sell character clothing in adult sizes (just like i wonder WHY they make spandex in XXL sizes, but that’s a whole other subject entirely), but when i leave my house only to discover that the reason why they do is because adults actually BUY and WEAR this stuff in public! yes, adults spend their hard earned money to wear a mouse with no shirt or a duck with no pants across their chest! this is all i am going to say on this subject because these are consenting adults making these fashion faux paus, but just for the record - disney is a destination, not a designer! don’t get me wrong - vintage mickey or snoopy, etc is COOL - but if it’s not vintage, than just say no…
