earlier this year, the wall street journal had an article on the ’walk of shame‘. for all of you mama’s out there who work outside the home, especially in professional, salaried roles - you know exactly what i am referring to… it is that walk that you have to make from your workplace’s entrance all the way to your office or cubicle, passing all your coworkers who are busy working already - and then again, having to walk BACK at the end of ‘your’ day. i myself do the walk of shame on my way in to the office after dropping the kids off at daycare - usually getting in around 9am, then i leave before 4:45pm to be sure i can beat traffic, pick the boys up at a decent hour and then be able to spend time with them at home before their bedtime….and those are only on the days that i actually make it IN to the office and not have to telecommute or have pediatrician, dentist, school events, etc to attend with my kids! of course, i am always connected, and am online before and after i get in, but i do get the occasional ‘nice of you to make it in’ comments from time to time, but to me, i really don’t mind because for some reason, i am not ashamed at all of this twice daily walk and the time i put in because i let my work speak for itself. to me, and many other mamas out there - we are ‘allowed’ this flexibility due to the work we produce on a daily/weekly/yearly basis. of course there are the other labels that we have to deal with as professionals such as being labeled on the ‘mommy-track’, which some equate to ‘less committed’ in the workplace. read more
shame on you! no, i am not talking about cheating on your husband - i am talking about the soccer/baseball/football field (you get the picture, right?) -yes, YOU can and SHOULD be the hippest mama on the field and - STILL be the most comfortable. these days, casual wear has gotten way more casual and active wear has gone way beyond the gym. add a couple cute, comfortable, and ultra-stylish velour tracksuits to your wardrobe and, with no ironing - you are ready to go. pair it with some flip-flops in the summer, or pumas or Ugg boots in the fall/winter, and TADA - YOU are the hippest mama on the block! oh, and one other fool-proof modern mama tip - ALWAYS carry a NICE handbag… you can shop in sweatpants or a worn-out tee shirt, but if you’ve got an uber stylish handbag tucked under your arm (not to mention some larger than life sunglasses!) - you will always be the portrait of style - even if you accidentally walked out the door with your son’s dried spit-up on your shirt…

yes! after a year off of not posting to my blog - i’m back! and this time (hopefully!) for good! thank you to all my fans out there who looked forward to reading my blogs (ok, thanks mom, dad, and that crazy lady down the street with the eight cats ;)) …seriously, imagine my surprise when i finally went into my inbox and found out that some of you have wondered what happened to the modern mama! did some mom in her xxl disney princess tee and matching spandex (if you don’t get this ‘joke’, read archived post ‘disney is a destination, not a designer part I) come and hunt her down after reading a few posts? did she buy a mini-van and crockpot and join the recipe of the month club?! nope, the fact is i was just busy - a term that ALL you mamas out there can relate to way too well. now that the wee ones are a little older at 2yrs and 4yrs, i finally have more time to do some posting on a regular basis since now the kids actually enjoy each others company for the most part instead of trying to use each other for target practice, sparring, or to conduct a ‘creative’ scientific experiment that never seems to go quite right.
speaking of this, i have now come to realize that curious george is the devil in monkey’s clothing! you (and i) view it as a 30 minute educational show on pbs that keeps the kids occupied for a short period of time - but do you know WHY they are so occupied and quiet during the show?! no, not because he is a cute little monkey…it is because this cute little monkey is TEACHING your little ones how to be uber mischievous! for example, one day my kids ‘randomly’ started getting cans out of the pantry and tried planting them in the backyard to grow food..another day they ‘randomly’ became extra fascinated with the bathtub and soap and tried to make ’snow’…and yet another day, wanted to ‘play’ with the alarm clock so they could set the time back an hour to give them more play time before having to go to bed. At first, my reaction to these cute, ‘creative’ ideas of inquiry/experiments was “wow, my kids sure are creative and smart!”…and then i realized it was the damn monkey! for example, here are some past episodes of curious george - ‘curious george plants a garden’, ‘curious george plays in the snow’…have you made the connection yet?! actually, curious george is one of my favorite kids shows that i actually enjoy watching with the kids. it sure beats spongebob and wonderpets…what is up with those shows?! that’s a whole new subject and future post!
anways, please visit my blog and come back often to share stories and opinions (translation: vent) with other fabulous mamas just like yourself on all things related to kids, shopping, fashion, home decor, party planning, love, and life - you know, those things our other half just doesn’t want to listen to (especially during football season!) …and don’t forget to tell a friend!
