i know i just got a lot of guys’ attention with this header (and maybe some unique, new visitors to my site!), but this post – fortunately or unfortunately is NOT about double d’s… ;) double d-d is the phrase my two-year old dylan exclaims every time he sees his reflection in the mirror because he thinks there are two dylan’s or d-d’s, since we often call him ‘d’ for short. it is funny to see how excited he gets at the thought of having a twin or clone of himself, although the thought of having two kids the SAME age at the same time (especially when they are babies and toddlers) is pretty unnerving for this modern mama! speaking of twins, what is up with all the hollywood mamas having twins?! off the top of my head i can think of j-lo, brangelina, mia hamm, kim porter, marcia cross, and the list goes on and on… is it something in the water or just the latest ‘in’ thing to do or have?!
actually i believe it is due to a few factors – age and money. all of these women are pushing 40 and of course, have money to burn due to their celebrity status. it is a scientific fact (omg, what is the modern mama doing quoting ’science’!) that women over the age of thirty are more likely to conceive twins than younger mothers as well as turn to the use of fertility drugs and in-vitro fertilization – which is not cheap. i heard that angelina jolie went the in-vitro route to conceive #5 and #6 and indicated that she didn’t want to have to go through the ‘stress’ of trying to conceive naturally…since when was having repeated sex with brad pitt deemed stressful?! ;) anyways, it will be interesting to see how many more hollywood moms produce their own double features in the years to come. perhaps the next craze to kick in (if it hasn’t already!) is paying the 30k+ for scientific intervention to guarantee the sex of your child. i am all for medical intervention if couples need help conceiving because no one should have to go through that stress month after month or year after year; however, i draw the line on paying big bucks to choose whether you want a boy or a girl. of course, i always wanted two boys close in age and that is exactly what i have, so maybe i am a little biased so wanted to open it up for discussion and see what other modern mamas have to say.
and, just to wrap up on the double d’s – here is a funny story that i am sure you will enjoy…one day, my older son jalen picked up my bra off the sink counter and exclaimed, “mommy, when you put this on your things go way up high (motioning HIGH on his chest), and when you take it off, they go WAY DOWN LOW!” (motioning way low by his belly button!) – for the record, they don’t go down that low, probably because i just don’t have enough up there to drop that low – but just wanted to clarify! ![]()
