when is baby fat just FAT?
posted by modern mama on Monday Sep 29, 2008 under fashion, general, lifesince my last post was on my favorite item of clothing – denim, i wanted to do a sort-of part II, especially since a reader inquired as to what are some faves when it comes to denim… i personally like boot cut denims. my favorite pair are my ‘joey twisted seams’ by true religion, although my billabong boot cuts and kitson’s fitted flares do get heavy rotation!
since the name of this post is on baby fat, i have to mention the queen of Baby Phat, ms. kimora lee simmons – did you know she has 500+ pairs of denims?! holy cow that is a lot! and although she is the definition of fabulous-ity (just ask her) and is a true modern mama at heart, it is still even un-comprehensible for me to grasp that she can wear one pair of denims every day of the year and not repeat (not to mention have to do laundry, although i am willing to bet she doesn’t ‘do laundry’!) i have 14 pairs of denims (1 white, 1 black, and the other 12 various shades of denim blue). - and shamelessly i have to admit, my collection ranges in various sizes depending on if i am working out, it’s the holidays, or…well you get the bloated picture. i am curious to know what the average amount of denims other modern mama’s have? how many do you have?
now i know i am getting way off subject (as always!), and haven’t even addressed the question in the title - when is baby fat just FAT - so here goes.
a few months ago i was out shopping (ok a few days ago i was out shopping, too, but that’s not when this story happened!) and i went to a newly opened denim boutique in town – or ‘denim bar’ as they are so chicly call these days. as any modern mama can attest to, the only thing worse than denim shopping is swim suit shopping, but i was in the mood… anyways, after trying on a ton of different pairs in different sizes, different brands, and different price ranges – i decided much to the overwhelmed sales girl’s dismay that i would not be adding to my denim collection this day since i wanted to ‘wait until i lost my last 5 lbs of baby fat’ (…it is really 7 lbs, but who’s counting…besides me) at this point, the size 0 sales waif excitedly exclaimed – ‘WOW, you JUST had a BABY?! YOU LOOK GREAT! How old is your baby?! – to which I began to reply ‘he’s two’…then, before i could even complete my sentence, she exclaimed, ‘WOW – two weeks or two months?! either way you still look GREAT! …now i didn’t clarify this with the sales girl, but my youngest is actually 2 YEARS – more like 2 ½ years, which brings me to the question, when is baby fat just FAT?! readers?!

Not counting my maternity collection (which I lend out as often as possible, hoping it all gets worn out so I can buy all new clothes next time I’m pregnant), I have 10 pairs of denims and two skirts, because sometimes it is just too hot.
I prefer to refer to my current extra 14 lbs as “mommy fat” as in, “Mommy can’t get to the gym because she is too busy, so she is getting fat.”

Ah, yes. Jeans. I have 11 pair (all various blues) and 4 denim skirts. Now, ask me how many of them fit. Answer: 1 pair and I just bought that pair last week. It took me 2 hours and 40+ try-ons to find jeans that fit properly and look decent. I’ve been elastic or drawstring waistband chick for the last four years since I got married and put on weight (20 lbs). I can’t blame it on “baby fat” because my son is 19! LOL I never realize how bad it’s gotten until I see a picture of myself and then spend an hour on Photoshop trying to make my waist thinner in the picture! =/ I’m still trying to figure out how to get it to update on my body when I click the save button! I haven’t thrown out the jeans that don’t fit because I keep telling myself I have to get back into them. So, there’s your answer about the denim, but I don’t have an answer to your baby fat question because I don’t have that as a valid excuse.

I have tons of jeans if I had to guess I would say about 15 pair. Probably more but those are in storage maybe I will fit them again. Now that my son is 16 months old I think that my fat is fat.

I hear ya on the “mommy fat”…I’m pregnant with my 5th…did I just say 5th? Yeah, so that’s a whole other issue, but you know its bad when you have “mommy fat” compounded with baby fat and three months to go. My days are pretty dismal right now. I have one pair of jeans I have kept from my pre-children days and they stand as a mantra for the day I reclaim my body. Good luck to all you mommies who are fighting the “mommy fat”. Be strong!

I have so many pairs that the thought of counting is overwhelming I have jeans for every occasion. It’s so wonderful to know that I’m not the only one who wears jeans every day. You don’t have to iron them! Yea, I still got the baby fat and my youngest is 4. The hubby keeps hinting that he thinks there is one more in heaven that needs to come to your family. I just haven’t been able to jump off that bridge yet. Ugh and to get fat again…..But their worth it. I have to admit.
